5 Tips To Start Reading
"Between the pages of a book is a wonderful place to be."
So ya, I feel reading is something which comes very
personally to each person. But trust me, it is something which is very soothing
and calming and should be given a shot by everyone. Everybody knows that it is
a great habit to read a book once in a while as it has tremendous amount of
benefits. You get to learn a lot, it increases your language skills, it’s a
great pass time and also it makes you think about everything. I know most of
the people are not much interested in reading books but trust me, once you start
reading you can feel the difference yourself. Whether it’s a novel, a
non-fiction, autobiographies, commentaries, articles or whatever, just start
with what interests you. I do not claim to be someone who knows everything
about reading but ya I would like to share some of the tips which helped me to
start reading and finally making it a habit to keep reading a book no matter
what.
- Choose the right book: As I mentioned above, just start with something which interests you. If you have interest in a particular topic, just start by reading a book on that topic. It will ensure that you will enjoy the book no matter what since it will be on a topic of your interest. Genre is something which again depends upon personal choice. Many people enjoy fiction and fantasy while others enjoy non-fiction. As for fiction, I would recommend to start with a thriller and mystery novel because trust me, you’ll enjoy those. You’ll stick to it till the end just to know the climax of all the suspense which such novels create. It is something which I’ve experienced personally that such books make you stick to them. As for nonfiction, I would again recommend to pick up a book which is based on a topic of your personal interest. Also I would recommend, not starting with a book which is very bulky. Just start with books which are light and short. If you are comfortable with a hard copy, buy a hard copy or if you are comfortable with reading on your phones, tabs or laptops, just download an e-book. But the only thing important is to choose the right book which will make you want to read no matter what.
- Set a Time Limit: I know that with our busy schedules every day we don’t have enough time to just dedicate it to reading. But once you start having interest in a book, trust me it won’t be a problem anymore. Just start by keeping a time limit. For example, just decide to start with your first book and finish it within a week or a month, whichever suits you. Just try to take out some time for reading every day, whether its fifteen minutes or half an hour, it doesn’t matter but the goal is to read a few pages daily. Just set a time goal and try to achieve it. Once you get used to it, it will become a habit. Once you set a time limit to finish a particular book, just stick to that time limit and try to take out some free and quiet time to read the book and finish it within the set period of time. Trust me, it’s a very useful tip which will help you when you start reading so that you do not get bored and give up on the book in the middle.
- Carry a book everywhere: Now this is something which is really important and also easy to be done. Just carry a book wherever you go because you never know when you’ll get some spare time to read. Just download an e-book on your phones or throw a hard cover in your bags and carry it when you go to work or to college. It is something which will also keep you from getting bored during those long lectures and will also help you in easily achieving the time limit which you have decided to finish a particular book. Also if you are a person who commutes daily trust me reading is the best way to pass your time when you are on a bus or a metro. Even if you are travelling, just read a book during those long flights and train journeys. You never know when you’ll face a situation where you are completely idle and have nothing to do. For such emergencies, just always carry the book you are reading. I personally do not go anywhere without a book in my bag. Whether I am taking a cab, or I am going for a lecture or any place else, I always carry a book. Reading while commuting is something which I’ve been doing a lot lately and trust me it’s very helpful when you are starting to read. So just carry a book wherever you go and read it whenever you get bored or have nothing else to do.
- Read before going to bed: If you are a person who is working or a college student like me, I think the best time to read every day is before going to sleep. I know everyone of us spends some time before going to bed on our phones, whether chatting with friends or scrolling down through social media. Instead of doing that, just pick up something to read for those few minutes till you fall asleep. Reading before going to bed has been very therapeutic for me and trust me once you start following this routine, you’ll witness for yourself that how good it feels. It’ll take time but trust me, once you develop a habit of reading before going to bed, you’ll feel so good about yourself. Even while you are starting reading, just try and read before dozing off to sleep. It is a very helpful tip for beginners and should be practised by everyone.
- Don’t give up: When you start reading a book once just don’t give up till you finish it. Just try to finish it within a set time period and don’t leave it in between. I think this is the most important point because I guess it happens with everyone that we get bored while reading and leave a book in the middle. Just don’t give up and finish the book. Try to take out some time from your schedule, set a time limit, read whenever and wherever you get time, but just finish a book once you start it. The key to developing the habit of reading is not to give up. Read in a setting in which you are comfortable, read whenever you are free, read whenever you want to but just read and just don't leave a book in between. If it is something which you start enjoying eventually then trust me your life will be totally different. :)
I hope these tips were useful,
thank you for reading. :)
