Best Books I've Read by Indian Authors

Since the time I started reading, I’ve read quite a large number of books and many of them have been books written by Indian authors. When I pick up a book to read, the only thing which I pay attention to is that whether the book sounds interesting to me. I am not someone who is much into reading famous books and that is why there are many famous books written by Indian authors which I still haven’t read. This list of books which are written by Indian authors and which I absolutely loved is not any genre specific. Though, you guys may find out that maximum of these books are based on Indian mythology since it’s a genre which interests me a lot and it gives me a reason to pick up books written by Indian authors. So here is the list of books by Indian authors which I loved and which I would definitely recommend you guys to read!

  • Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

So this is a book which I read around two years back and I found it to be really beautiful. It’s a retelling of the story of Mahabharata from the view point of Draupadi. It’s a book which has been written in a wonderful manner and the way the story has been put forward is just gorgeous. It’s a book which I would definitely recommend all the people to read and if you are someone who is into reading Indian mythology, then just don’t miss out on this book!

  • The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

This is a book which has been really special to me since it was one of the books which I read during the first year when I started reading in 2010. I love the way the difficulty of adjusting to a particular culture has been brought forward through the story. It’s one of the best stories I’ve ever read. It is very emotional and very relatable. It has been written in a wonderful manner by the author and it will  definitely remain a very special read for me forever and I think everybody should read this book and you’ll realize for yourself that how beautiful it is!

  • Asura: Tale of the Vanquished by Anand Neelkantan

As I’ve previously mentioned a lot of times in my blog posts and on my Instagram (ravisha_pushkar), Asura is one of my favourites. I just love the book. It brings out the story of Ramayana from the view point of Ravana. The way war has been depicted in this book is just wonderful. The way the sufferings of the poor and downtrodden have been brought out through the story is something which made me cry when I read this book. It’s definitely my favourite Indian mythology book ever written.

  • Shikhandi: And Other Queer Tales They Don’t Tell You by Devdutt Pattanaik

I’ve read a few books written by Devdutt Pattanaik and I feel that he is one of the best writers when it comes to Indian mythology. But this is a book which made it to my favourites list because it is so different. Queerness is a subject which people have eventually started speaking about but there are still people who frown upon the subject. The way the author has thrown light upon the topic by means of short stories from the Indian mythology is just great. The only thing which is wrong with the book is that it cannot be understood by people who have no detailed knowledge about the Indian mythology since the stories are even based on very small and minute characters from the Indian mythology which are not known by everybody. Personally, I just loved this book and I think the author has done a commendable job!

  • An Unsuitable Boy by Karan Johar and Poonam Saxena

It’s a book which is very special to me and is very close to my heart since it was the first book I reviewed when I started reviewing books on my Instagram. I’ve heard it from many people that they felt that this book is over exaggerated and therefore they did not like it. But personally, I found this book to be really nice. I am not a Karan Johar fan but still I feel that this autobiography has been written in a manner which addresses many important issues. I think it’s a book which has taught me to accept myself as I am and not to be ashamed about it. I think it’s a wonderful book and I recommend all of you to give it a read!

  • Ajaya: Roll of the Dice (Book 1) by Anand Neelkantan

Another Indian mythology which I absolutely loved, this book is the retelling of the story of Mahabharata from the view point of Duryodhana. It has described Duryodhana as a positive character. It is the first book in the series of the two books and I’ll be starting with its second part really soon. I just love the books written by the author and I always find them to be so different. The way famous wars have been described by the author as a means of suffering for the poor, is something which always makes me feel so fortunate about the life I am living. If you haven’t read this book, trust me you are missing out on some good story telling and some really wonderful writing!

  • Tales from Firozsha Baag by Rohinton Mistry

This book is a collection of short stories written by the author and I’ve almost finished reading all of them. I am just loving the stories and I feel that I am able to connect emotionally to the characters of each and every story. The way the stories of Indian middle class households have been brought out is great. I’ll be putting up a detailed review of this book next week so don’t forget to check that out!
