Book Review: Mum & Princess Go Spying by Payel Bhattacharya

About the Author:

Payel Bhattacharya is an Indian author who is currently located in Delhi. She has put forward her sufferings and hardships being a patient of von-hippel Lindau disease through various poems and sketches and also through her first long poem named ‘The Warrior Princess’. Due to her mental health she took it as a challenge to write detective fiction and the book- Mum & Princess Go Spying is a result of that challenge.

About the Book:

‘Mum & Princess Go Spying’ is a novella which consists of three short stories about a girl named Princess and her mother who help the famous detectives in their city, Varma and Sharma to solve difficult cases and murder mysteries in their locality. Princess’s brother is also a police inspector who is introduced in the third story and helps in solving the final case. All the three stories are murder mysteries which are investigated by Princess and her mother along with the detectives. The first story is about the murder of a dancer girl who lives across the street from Princess’s house, the second story is a murder mystery in the Aditya Villa located in the locality where Princess and her mother lives and the third and the final story is about reincarnation of a small child named Gogol which leads to solving of a murder mystery which is six years old. All the three stories and mysteries take place one after the other and are therefore in continuation. In the end it is clear that Princess and her mother have done a great deal in solving cases in their city and would definitely keep helping the cops in their city in order to bring justice as soon as possible.

Review:

‘Mum & Princess Go Spying’ is an ebook which I received as a review copy from the publishing house Half Baked Beans and I was highly excited to read it since I was already aware about the condition of the author and about the challenge which the author has taken up in order to prove herself. The work done by the author is absolutely great. I was spellbound when I realised the fact that the author has managed to create such wonderful stories even while suffering from multiple brain tumours. All the three stories are short and crisp to read. The book is a very light read with stories which are so interesting and simple which will definitely remind a reader of the detective stories we all used to read in our childhood. The stories are that simple and cute to read. All of them have a happy and satisfying ending. I think all the stories are quite interesting which will bind the reader to their happy endings. My favourite story out of the three stories definitely has to be the third story since it had a plot of reincarnation. It is a topic which interested me very much and I feel that it was the story which was written and formed perfectly. The amount of thrill in all the stories is just perfect, not too much and not too little. The book is a wonderful short time read which is definitely meant to make you smile!

To Red or Not to Read:

As I’ve already mentioned, the book is a small and fun read which will definitely raise a small amount of curiosity in the mind of the readers. The stories are cute and will make you happy. So, do read this book when you are looking for something light and fun to read. Also, these stories are great for kids and so don’t forget to make small and growing kids around you to read this book.
