The Best and Worst Books of 2018

2018 was a very satisfying year for me as far as reading is concerned. I was able to read a total of twenty nine books which I feel is quite an achievement for me. My reading journey throughout the year has been beautiful which finally led me to start reviewing books on Instagram and then finally being able to start my book blog in July, 2018. It’s been a wonderful year for me and I completely owe it to reading. I read a good number of books in 2018, some were those which I’ve been looking forward to since a long time, some were gifted, some were review copies and some were out of my comfort zone and were completely new for me. 2018 has been a roller coaster ride for me and I feel that I’ve read many types of books this year. Therefore, here is the list of the three best and three worst books which I read in 2018.

Best Books:

  • Princess by Jean Sasson:

This book definitely has to be one of my favourite books. As I’ve mentioned already in a lot of my blog posts and on my Instagram (_booksonly_) that Jean Sasson is one of my all-time favourite authors and I love reading her books. They are very realistic as they are inspired from the lives of real people and are generally women centric. Princess was the story about Princess Sultana who is one of the many princesses of the Saudi Royal Family. It’s a series of three books and I’ve read two of them till now. This first book of the series is the best and I think it took my thoughts to another level and made me very emotional while reading it. It definitely is one of the best books I read in 2018.

  • I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai:

I love reading autobiographies as they provide a realistic picture of a person’s life, feelings and thoughts, I Am Malala for sure is the best autobiography I’ve read till date. It was so inspiring and I definitely learned a lot from it. It is one of those books which changed my perspective towards life and made me realise that how fortunate I am to be living such a hustle free life. The book has been written in such a wonderful manner which made me feel so close to the author’s life. The way Malala Yousafzai has described her and her family’s sufferings as well as their strength is just wonderful. It’s definitely the most inspiring book I read in 2018. • Manto Ki Badnaam Kahaniyan by Saadat Hasan Manto:

I randomly got this book from the book fair just for fifty rupees and I never expected it to be so wonderful. Reading the short stories from this book was a different experience for me since it made me realise the beauty of Hindi language. All the stories written by the author are wonderful and throw light upon necessary topics and feelings of every human being. Being so famous for his work, the stories written by the author are definitely a treat for literature lovers and was definitely the best set of short stories I’ve read till date. This book has encouraged me to read more books in Hindi and I’ll be getting my hands on some great pieces of Hindi literature soon. This book has been definitely one of my favourite reads in 2018 since it helped me come out of my comfort zone. You can check its detailed review by clicking the link here.

Worst Books:

  • Turtles All the Way Down by John Green:

I’ve read almost all the books written by the author and I’ve always been satisfied with them but this book was just a disappointment. I’ve been looking forward to read this book since a long time as I had a lot of expectations from it. The story was very normal and was not that interesting. The story did throw light upon important issues but it failed to reach the expectations which a John Green fan has. This book has definitely been one of the most disappointing reads of the year as it did not appeal to me in any way.

  • After Dark by Haruki Murakami:

It’s the second book I read by the author and I was not impressed by it at all. The ending was so abrupt which made the whole plot useless. There are readers who just love reading Murakami books but I’ve read two his works till date, the first being Norwegian Wood. But, the author’s books have always failed to impress me. This book definitely was a major disappointment. It’s written in an interesting manner and the plot building is very interesting but trust me, there’s nothing at the end of it. It’s just abrupt which made me feel really disappointed after finishing this book.

  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald:

This book is a classic and is really famous and that is why I was looking forward to read it since a long time. I was not impressed by the movie and so I decided to give the book a shot. It was definitely not a book which was as great as I expected it to be. I always expect classics to be exceptionally good which I generally don’t find them to be when I read them. This is one of those books. The story was not at all extra ordinary. It was very normal and was not at all outstanding as I expected it to be. This book has definitely been one of those books which have majorly disappointed me. You can check out the full review of the book by clicking here.

Thank you for reading. :)
