Book Review: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

BOOK REVIEW: THE GREAT GATSBY BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

About the Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American fiction writer who lived from 1986-1940. He published four novels and many short stories during his time and is regarded as one the greatest American writers of the 20th century. A number of biographies have also been published on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life.

About the Book: The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925 in America and is regarded as one of the most famous books of all time. It revolves around the mysterious life of a millionaire named Jay Gatsby and his love for his long lost lover, Daisy. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway who is Gatsby’s neighbour and he unfolds the story of Jay Gatsby and his obsession with Daisy. The villain of the story is Tom Buchanan, who is Daisy’s husband. He is a person who cheats on his wife but becomes furious when he discovers that his wife is involved in a love relationship with her lover from before marriage. The story basically focuses on Jay Gatsby- how he was as a person, how did he acquire so much wealth, what was his past about and what made him love Daisy uncontrollably. The story also involves various other characters who are involved in the life of Jay Gatsby. The story ends with the narrator describing that how was his life effected by the presence of Jay Gatsby and that though being a person with such a mysterious personality, Jay Gatsby was a great human being. The book has also been adopted in various forms as movies, television series and video games.

Review: The Great Gatsby is a book which I read after I had already watched its film adaptation released in 2013. Frankly, I was not much impressed with the movie and I just decided to read the book because it’s a classic and I decided not to judge it by watching the movie only. The best thing about the book is that it’s a small and compact read. It consists only of 130 pages and can be read in a small amount of time. So, when I started reading the book, the first thing which I realised from the beginning was that it was definitely better than the movie. The story is very very simple. It’s a normal story with a bit of love quotient, mystery and thriller. I really liked the way in which such a simple story is written and I am sure that it is the only reason which makes the book so widely famous. The story though not being very great, has been narrated in a wonderful manner. The way every scene and expression has been described by the narrator is beautiful. The part which I loved the most about the book was the ending. It shows that no matter how famous a person is or how many friends does one have, during the time of need only a few of them turn up. The last chapter is therefore my favourite. It’s kind of an epilogue to the story which has been most beautifully described by the narrator. It is a kind of a book which may seem boring to many people because the story is not that happening. Trust me, it is a fact which turned me off as well. But, if you are someone who admires reading and writing then you will love the way this story has been put forward and has been described. It’s a bit hard to relate to since it is set in 1922 and was also written during that time but that’s how all classics are. I found it to be a onetime read and I would definitely suggest not to judge it only by watching the movie.

To Read or not to Read: As I mentioned above, do not judge this book by the movie. If you are into reading then trust me you will love the way this classic has been written and do not forget to read this book. But, if you are someone who only looks for how interesting the story is then this book may be a disappointment for you people.
